animals and nature. Throughout history, we have influenced one another in ways that are sometimes caring and admiring, and at other times controlling or destructive. Animals have shaped how humans understand nature, belief, science, and beauty, just as human actions have shaped animal lives.In Viane’s paintings, humans and animals face each other directly. To be eye to eye suggests equality or understanding, but these encounters are rarely comfortable. Instead, they expose tensions between care and control, admiration and responsibility.The animals return the viewer’s gaze with strength and presence, while human figures are subtly exaggerated or placed in uncertain roles. Rendered with a light, playful touch and a hint of satire, the works balance humor with discomfort.Eye to Eye invites viewers to reflect on their own position in this shared history, and to recognize themselves in the gaze of the other, human or animal. Gallery,&nbsp; Antwerp, 2024For his solo exhibition at Art Antwerp 2024, Dittmar Viane introduces a new series of works that blends elements of the past and present. His works remind us of the fleeting nature of the moment, as well as the immortality of art, which offers deeper insights into ourselves and the world around us. Dittmar Viane’s work draws on the rich tradition of Early Netherlandish painting, blending its realist techniques with contemporary visual paradoxes. Influenced by masters like Dirk Bouts and Hans Memling, Viane employs oil paint and fine brushes to achieve delicate transitions and lifelike transparency through glazing. While one exhibition will be more focused on narrative in figurative painting, the other one will touch on the momentary, cerebral and conceptual works. Titled after the Bob Dylan song, this double-exhibition which spans the two galleries of Sofie Van de Velde (South and New South), asks us to leave the matter behind us. The exhibition shows abstract works on the one hand: artists fitting in a more minimal, still, and conceptual thinking; and figurative narrative works on the other hand. A ‘non-discussion’, as Sofie Van de Velde calls the tension between figuration and abstraction. Dylan sings that the relationship is over, and his former love doesn’t need to look back to what was but notice what is present. Similarly, the exhibition pleads for the devaluation of binary thinking in art. You’ll see how some artists could’ve fit in the other group, which emphasises the absurdity of the categorisation. The fifteenth-century escutcheons have been very carefully restored in recent years. In this exhibition, the full series can be admired for the first time at close quarters. In addition, curator Hannah Iterbeke (Museum Hof van Busleyden) and guest curator Magali Elali (The Constant Now) have selected another eighty artworks and objects from various time periods for this exhibition. These pieces are designed to challenge visitors to doubt their assumptions and ask questions. The exhibition seeks in this way to offer a critical outlook on the image and mythology around the Order of the Golden Fleece and to place historical concepts and symbols in a new perspective. How does the PR machine of the Burgundian dukes work? How do they employ magnificent tapestries, banquets and tournaments to enhance their power? What do identity and ‘belonging’ actually mean to them? These questions not only invite visitors to unravel the myth of the Order of the Golden Fleece, but bring currency and relevancy to the story. For, just like the Burgundian dukes of the past, a contemporary international organisation like the European Union is constantly looking for ways to create unity and solidarity. The raven was, according to the Koran, the first teacher of people and the canaries in the coal mine have already done many heroic deeds. In short, these winged creatures deserve a worthy place.
